Unlike another well-know national flag that originated in Estonia – the current flag of the Kingdom of Denmark – the Estonian tricolour didin’t flutter down from the sky in the middle of a battle as chronicles say the Dannebrog did in 13th century Tallinn. The Estonian flag doesn’t feature the colour red like field of battle. It doesn’t have anything to do with religion, lacking symbols like crosses or other emblems.
While the lions depicted on the Estonian coat of arms are a borrowing from the royal Danish seal, the origins of the Estonian national colours are similar in some regards to the story behind Germany’s red, black and gold. The national tricolour came out of the 19th century national awakening and was a statement of self-determination made by idealistic students. In Estonia’s case, their generation was the first to attend university after spending most the last millennium as serfs.

Catalogue introduces you the story of the Estonian flag. The story of its origins, underground existence etc. Catalogue also tells you about the flag today and its future.
