Estonian national costume belt was a special item – it helped to highlight the beauty of men’s and women’s clothing and was an important ritual and gift item.
Each belt has a woven message that conveys its maker’s skill, imagination and color-matching ability, as well as cultural beliefs. Belts have become a kind of symbol of national expression.
The purpose of the voluminous colorful album is to introduce the belts and to show the development of belt types. Belts and ribbons play an important role in getting a comprehensive picture of Estonian handicraft techniques, trends in folk art and the richness of motifs.
Photographs that convey ornamentation to the finest allow the book to be used by craft enthusiasts. The book contains summaries in English and German, as well as belt charts.
